Multi-Use Pathway Crossing of the Rideau River

The City of Ottawa has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) Study for a future multi-use connection across the Rideau River at Donald Street and Somerset Street East. The intent of this future bridge and pathway connection is to provide better pedestrian and cycling links between the communities of Overbrook and Vanier on the east side of the river and Sandy Hill and downtown on the west side of the river.

The project followed the requirements for a Schedule ‘C’ project under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2007) document. An Environmental Study Report (ESR) documenting the purpose, rationale, recommended plan and mitigation measures has been prepared.

The “Ottawa Moves” initiative in the 2012 budget provided for funding to undertake detailed design for this project. With EA approval now secured this design work can be started by the Infrastructure Services Department. At this time there is no approved funding or timeline for the construction component of this project.
