Sandy Hill Heritage Study

Interested residents attended a meeting on June 29, 2010 to hear the results of the Sandy Hill Heritage Study. The consulting team presented their recommendations regarding policies and guidelines to manage change within the existing heritage conservation districts and study area as a whole.

The key objectives of the study include:

  • Providing an architectural and historical inventory of approximately 850 pre-1950 buildings in Sandy Hill East, in an area bounded by King Edward Street to the west, Range Road to the east, Besserer Avenue to the north and Osgoode Street to the south. The area contains five early Heritage Conservation districts: King Edward HCD, Sweetland HCD, Stewart/Wilbrod HCD, Besserer/Daly/Augusta/Cobourg HCD, and Charlotte/Wilbrod/Laurier/Chapel HCD
  • Identifying additional groups of buildings which could be designated as new heritage conservation districts under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act or as individual heritage properties under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, and
  • Preparing a Heritage Conservation District Plan to manage the five existing districts and any new districts that might be identified through this study.

The City hired the consulting team led by Rosanne Moss of Fournier Gersovitz Moss et Associés Architectes and Professor Herb Stovel, Heritage Conservation Consultant.

Results of the research, inventory and documentation phase of the study were presented at a public meeting in November, 2009.
