Smoke-Free Regulations

Let’s clear the air

The City of Ottawa has adopted amendments to its by-laws to provide for more smoke-free spaces. The amendments are part of a strategy that is designed to protect children and non-smokers from second-hand smoke, while reducing smoking rates. Ottawa Public Health’s consultations and public opinion research indicate strong support from residents for expanded smoke-free spaces. For help to quit smoking

As of April 2, 2012, the following spaces will be smoke free:

  • All outdoor areas on municipal properties including parks, playgrounds, beaches, sports fields, and outdoor areas around City facilities
  • ByWard and Parkdale Market stands
  • Outdoor restaurant, bar, and food premise patios

The new smoke-free regulations apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The City will undertake a phased-in approach for enforcement of the new smoke-free regulations. Beginning April 2, 2012, a warning phase and a public awareness and education campaign will be implemented. The public awareness and education campaign will help ensure all Ottawa residents and tourists are aware of the new regulations. Beginning July 2, 2012, charges will be laid as appropriate.

Enforcement

Starting July 2, 2012, contraventions of the new regulations may result in the issuance of Provincial Offence Notice tickets that will carry a fine.
